Molecular Characterization of Burned Organic Matter at Different Soil Depths and Its Relationship with Soil Water Repellency: A Preliminary Result

چکیده
Soil water repellency (hydrophobicity) prevents from wetting or infiltrating soils, triggering changes in the ecosystems. This physical property is directly correlated to erodibility grade of a soil. Wildfire events may develop, enhance, destroy soil hydrophobicity, modifying and increasing loss its most reactive layer (organic matter). To assess main organic family compounds (biomarkers) surrogates fire-induced repellency, study was carried out on fire-affected under eucalyptus canopy at two depths (0–2 2–5 cm) Portugal. The potential measured using drop penetration time (WDPT) test. molecular characterization hydrophobic biomarkers analytical pyrolysis (Py-GC/MS) combination with multivariate statistical analysis (PCA, MLR). upper burned displayed significant contribution fresh biomass (lignin polysaccharides), while deepest (2–5 one showed more humified matter (lipids). hydrophobicity non-polar compounds, such as lipids polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), inversely unspecific compounds. mass spectrometry techniques chemometric allowed obtaining preliminary forecast model degree samples canopy. approach opens door developing sensitive mathematical models predict alteration other properties induced by fires.

Soil Organic Matter: Its Fractionation and Role in Soil Structure
An understanding of the form and function of SOM in soil is essential to sustainable crop production. Various methods of SOM fractionation are used to study SOM forms and to gain an understanding of interaction between SOM and aggregate formation. Physical SOM fractionation techniques are based on the concept that SOM associated with particles of various sizes. differs in structure and function...

Fractal behavior of soil water storage at multiple depths
Spatiotemporal behavior of soil water is essential to understand the science of hydrodynamics. Data intensive measurement of surface soil water using remote sensing has established that the spatial variability of soil water can be described using the principle of self-similarity (scaling properties) or fractal theory. This information can be used in determining land management practices provide...
متن کاملCharacterization of Organic Matter in Soil and Aquifer Solids
The focus of this work was the evaluation of analytical methods to determine and characterize fractions of subsurface organic matter. Major fractions of total organic carbon (TOC) include: particulate organic carbon (POC) in aquifer material, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and both volatile (VOC) and non-volatile (NVOC) organic carbon sub-fractions. POC makes up the bulk of TOC in contaminated ...
